More than 30 Iqalummiut attended the City of Iqaluit’s final public consultation meeting held June 17 at the parish hall to talk about plans for a new subdivision in the Road to Nowhere area. Mélodie Simard, the Iqaluit city planner, said the development will contain a mix of uses, including commercial and residential. “GN has told us they may want to have a school in the neighbourhood,” Simard said. “So there might be a school and some playgrounds as well.” Simard and Christopher Moise, manager of urban design at Fotenn Consultants Inc., showed a draft development scheme to the public. Simard said the new subdivision will hold about 500 units. “We’re looking at 1,500 to 2,000 people,” Simard said. She will accept comments on the draft development scheme until the end of August, and urges people to contact her to discuss the city’s plans. Construction could begin as early as 2017.
