The Nunatsiavut government’s president Sarah Leo holds a basket made by Martha and Lucassie Echalook of Inukjuak, a gift from Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami president Terry Audla, at the Sept. 10 official opening of the Nunatsiavut assembly building in Hopedale, Labrador. “It has been a long hard struggle to get to this moment,” Audla said to the large crowd outside the new blue and grey building with an igloo-shaped roof. “I am so proud to be here today to share in this historic moment. As the national Inuit leader, I would like everyone to know that the Inuit who live in Nunavik, Nunavut, and the Inuvialuit regions are also here in spirit sharing in this ceremony and supporting the political, social, and economic success of our fellow Inuit in Nunatsiavut.” (PHOTO COURTESY OF ITK)
