Inuit will appeal the recent European Union court ruling on the seal ban, says Mary Simon, president of Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami. Earlier this month, the EU court ruled against the Canadian Inuit case challenging the ban against seal products in 27-EU member countries on the grounds of “admissibility.” During the ITK annual general meeting, held this week at the Ingamo Hall in Inuvik, leaders from across Canada’s North discussed the next step to take in this case. They unanimously decided to appeal the Sept. 6 ruling. The deadline to file the notice of appeal is Nov. 22. “We fully expect our views on the injustice of the EU legislation to be vindicated,” Simon said in a Sept. 29 statement. “Inuit will not rest until the EU courts strike down this unfair and unjust legislation.” (PHOTO BY S.
