Photo: Justin Trudeau names Nunavut’s Hunter Tootoo to cabinet

Hunter Tootoo, the veteran politician who swept Conservative Leona Aglukkaq out of the Nunavut seat she’s held since 2008 by grabbing 47 per cent of the vote in the Oct. 19 federal election, will serve in Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s cabinet, following swearing-in ceremonies at Rideau Hall in Ottawa that started at around 10:30 a.m. Nov. 4. Tootoo will serve as minister of Fisheries and Oceans and minister responsible for the Coast Guard. Toronto MP Carolyn Bennett will serve as minister of the re-named Indigenous and Northern Affairs portfolio and Ottawa MP Catherine McKenna will serve as minister of Environment and Climate Change. Nunavut Premier Peter Taptuna immediately sent his congratulations to Tootoo on Twitter, saying “I look forward to working with you.” (FILE PHOTO)
