Photo: Kiruna welcomes Arctic Council
Welcome to Kiruna, the northern Swedish town which mining made — and will now move. This city model on display in Kiruna shows where the new city centre will be moved due to unstable land and the need to expand the huge iron mine, the Kirunavaara mine, run by LKAB. Ministers from the Arctic Council’s eight member nations, along with the council’s permanent indigenous participants, will meet May 15 in Kiruna’s current town hall — and then visit the mine site after their ministerial meeting ends. Read more about the events on May 15, which include the hand-over of the Arctic Council chairmanship to Canada, with exclusive on-site coverage and photos for Nunatsiaqonline.ca.
