Photo: Water bombers arrive to douse Nunavik fire

A water bomber from the Sociéte de protection des forêts contre le feu (SOPFEU), whose head office is in Quebec City, dumps water onto a forest fire about 2.5 kilometres south of Kuujjuaq airport June 23. Two SOPFEU water bombers arrived in the Nunavik community to battle a fire in an area known locally as the Range. Local firefighters, members of the Canadian Rangers and local volunteers have all been helping to contain the fire since June 22. According to a Kativik Regional Government statement June 23, there have been no reports of injuries, missing persons or property damage so far. Kuujjuammiut have been helping out by bringing tea, bannock, sandwiches, stew and even maqtaq to feed the firefighters.
