Future lawyer Marie Belleau has won the Laura Ulluriaq Gauthier scholarship for 2011, Lorne Kusugak, the minister responsible for the Qulliq Energy Corp., announced this week in the Nunavut legislature. “Belleau, originally from Iqaluit, has been extremely dedicated to her studies over the past few years, having completed a B.A. and an LL.B. from Laval University, as well as a her J.D. (Juris Doctor) from the University of Ottawa,” Kusugak said. Belleau plans to take the bar exam in Ontario and Quebec and eventually move back to Nunavut to practice law, where “she hopes to work toward improving the lives of Inuit through her expertise and knowledge,” Kusugak said. The scholarship honours Gauthier, who, as an assistant deputy minister, was “instrumental in the formation of our made-in-Nunavut electrical utility now known as the Qulliq Energy Corporation,” Kusugak noted.
