Visitors tour Iqaluit’s greenhouse on August 3 when the Iqaluit Community Greenhouse Society marked the height of the growing season with an open house and fundraiser. Society members recently harvested their third crop of the summer, including lettuce, snow peas, beets and basil. “We’re harvesting something every week,” said board member Sara Holzman. “To be able to actually benefit from what you’re growing is really satisfying.” Also in this year’s crop are kale, spinach, chard, and larger vegetables like radishes, beets, carrots, beans and tomatoes. “It’s great, it’s fresh and you know where it came from,” said Stephen Leyden, who gave short tours on Saturday. Greenhouse gardening is “not about what you bring home. But it’s great, it’s fresh, and you know where it came from.” (PHOTO BY PETER VARGA)
