What are the chances of winning gold in your first ever competition? The chances are 100 per cent if you're Nykesha Dyer-Aknavigak. The 10-year-old from Cambridge Bay returned home March 2 from a weekend speed skating tournament in Yellowknife with the proof hanging around her neck: gold in the 1,500-metre race. Dyer-Aknavigak, normally quiet and reserved, was so proud of the win that she wore her medal to school to show her friends and teachers. (PHOTO BY KELCEY WRIGHT)
