Photo: Louis St-Laurent to complete offshore mapping for UNCLOS

The Canadian Coast Guard Ship Louis St-Laurent, seen here on an earlier voyage, set out from Dartmouth, N.S July 22 on the last leg of an offshore Arctic seabed research project that will generate data to complete Canada’s submission under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea for the extension of seabed rights on the continental shelf. The CCGS Louis St-Laurent will sail to Tromso, Norway and is expected to rendezvous with the Swedish icebreaker Oden off Svalbard on Aug. 9. From there the two vessels will do seabed mapping work in the farthest reaches of the Arctic Ocean, around Amundsen Basin, Lomonosov Ridge, Makarov Basin and Alpha Ridge.
