Photo: March 24, World TB Day

This is a close-up of a tuberculosis culture, showing the bacteria which still makes many Inuit in Canada ill. World TB Day falls March 24 each year, commemorating the day in 1882 when Dr. Robert Koch announced that he had discovered TB bacillus, the cause of the affliction. TB rates among Inuit remain the highest in Canada, with half of the active TB cases in Nunavut afflicting young people 15 to 34 years old, mainly from Iqaluit and Cape Dorset. In 2012, the Nunavik community of Kangiqsualujjuaq also dealt with a severe outbreak of TB. Read more about efforts to combat TB later March 25 on Nunatsiaqonline.ca.
