Photo: Mary River a go, says NIRB

If the federal government accepts recommendations from the Nunavut Impact Review Board, Baffinland Iron Mines Corp. will likely be able to move ahead with the Mary River iron mine project. The company proposes using Milne Inlet, seen here, to ship construction supplies to the mine site. After construction of a mine, railway and port are completed, the Milne port would be used only occasionally and shipping activity would be centred around a port on Steensby Inlet. “After a thorough review of the potential ecosystemic and socio-economic impacts of the Project Proposal, the Board has concluded that the Mary River Project may proceed, in accordance with the terms and conditions recommended in the Final Hearing Report,” the news release said. That final report will now go to AAND minister John Duncan, who will decide on the NIRB’s recommendations. Read more about the final hearing report of the NIRB on Nunatsiaqonline.ca. (FILE PHOTO)
