Photo: Maud shipwreck now on the barge in Cambridge Bay

Roald Amundsen’s Maud ship has now been successfully, and carefully, placed on a barge which will eventually transfer the historic explorer’s ship back to Vollen, Norway. “The impact of Maud rising slowly out of the sea moves us all and we feel as if times has stood still for 100 years,” wrote Jan Wanggaard, who has lead the five-year “Maud Returns Home” repatriation project. “Worn and torn but still so full of life and beauty.” The 100-year-old ship sank from its moorings in Cambridge Bay 85 years ago. You can follow the project’s progress through the Maud’s Facebook page and the blog maudreturnshome.no. (PHOTO BY DENISE LEBLEU IMAGES)
