Meet the Ikaarvik Police: Three students from Ikaarvik school in Puvirnituq, Anita Aupaluk, Etuk Uhaituk, and Sorena Kanayuk, have proven their leadership skills in the school yard. The third graders are members of the Ikaarvik Police, a project launched by the KMHB’s Pivalliniq program in collaboration with the Kativik Regional Police Force. The students wear yellow vests at recess and intervene with fellow students if they see a fight or a student who is crying or hurt. Ikaarvik principal Sarah Angiyou said that since the program began, there is much less fighting at recess, and that often students will go to one of these three students for help before asking a teacher. To celebrate the students’ level two achievement, they were invited to ride around town in KRPF Captain Jean-François Morin’s police truck. (PHOTO COURTESY OF PIVALLIANIQ)
