Photo: New charity effort donates winter clothing to needy Nunavummiut

Cpl. Yvonnne Niego of the RCMP’s “V” division community policing section, with two GN workers in Iqaluit, organizing the first shipment of Nunavut snowsuits that local Iqaluit agencies will give out to needy residents. It’s part of a charity effort called the Nunavut Snowsuit Fund, based in Ottawa, that gathers donations of warm outerwear for Nunavut residents who can’t afford to buy expensive winter clothes. “One recipient was receiving help to get their life back on track and was starting a new job, but with recent cold weather was in need of a warm coat and boots to get to and from home and work. The package reached the organization the day this person really needed them to start their new career,” Niego said. Those who wish to donate to the Nunavut Snowsuit Fund may email Nunavutsnowsuitfund@hotmail.com, or drop off donations at Larga Baffin, 1071 Richmond Rd. or MacKinnon’s Foodland in Greely. The fund also has a Facebook page. (PHOTO COURTESY OF THE RCMP)
