Newmont Mining Corp. sponsored the Feb. 14 banquet at the Kitikmeot Trade Show in Cambridge Bay, but it’s likely the last time the gold mining giant will make such a gesture. Here Chris Hanks, vice-president of environment at Hope Bay Mining Ltd., talks about why his company decided to put the gold-rich Hope Bay mine project into “long term care and maintenance” last month. Among the top reasons: a lack of certainty over land access that would allow Newmont to recover its “significant investment” to date of about $2.1 billion.
