Photo: No bear, but we see what it left behind…

While wildlife officers continue to search Nunavut’s capital for polar bears, we know from local sightings that at least one lumbered through the Plateau area of the city and left behind this paw print at a playground there. The Government of Nunavut’s environment department put out a public service announcement at 2:30 July 16 to confirm what dozens on Facebook and Twitter had already said, that at least one polar bear had wandered through the centre of town and made its way to the causeway. According to wildlife officers, it was last seen ducking behind an island in Frobisher Bay. Iqaluit resident Alicia Manning tweeted a photo of a polar bear walking behind buildings near downtown exclaiming “over 9 nears in #Iqaluit and seen my first polar bear today!” (PHOTO BY DAVID MURPHY)
