Photo: No sign of footprints outside of BCC

The only outdoor recreation area available to inmates at Iqaluit’s Baffin Correctional Centre shows no sign of footprints Feb. 5, three days after the latest snowfall in Nunavut’s capital. By Canadian and United Nations’ standards, prisoners are required to have access to fresh air for a minimum of one hour per day. After one inmate at BCC told Nunatsiaq News that fresh air had been withheld for over two months, justice department officials said access to the outdoor area had been temporarily denied because of increased smuggling activity.
But that temporary measure had ended, justice officials said Jan. 13. “Regular fresh air programming occurs at all of the Department of Justice’s correctional facilities,” a department official said. (PHOTO BY THOMAS ROHNER)
