Photo: Norwegian crew nears Cambridge Bay for Maud raising

While only a small portion of Roald Amundsen’s sunken Maud is visible above the water near Cambridge Bay, an aerial view offers a glimpse of the entire ship as it rests on the sea floor. The Norwegian Maud Returns Home crew, lead by Jan Wanggaard, left Norway, on June 25 and, according to their website, they are now in the Queen Maud Gulf, near their destination. Wanggaard and other crew members have gone on ahead to Cambridge Bay to make preparations to raise the Maud, which sank in 1930, and tow her back to Norway. “As it looks now we will have only a short month of work until we have to prepare everything for the winter,” Wanggaard wrote in his latest blog entry. “In practice this means we will have limited time for doing what we want.” (PHOTO COURTESY MAUDRETURNSHOME.NO)
