Photo: Nothing says Nunavut Day like fresh seal meat

Making you hungry? Deft butchers show off their traditional skills during a seal skinning contest in Iqaluit as part of Nunavut Day celebrations July 9. A full day’s worth of feasting, games, music and crafts awaited Nunavummiut at Iqaluit’s Inuksuk High School this past weekend. Cold winds, fog and rain forced many of the day’s scheduled activities indoors but that didn’t seem to affect attendance with standing room only crowds inside the school’s Tisi room and gymnasium throughout the day. Events such as the chili cook-off, golf putting challenge and ball drop brought in thousands of dollars for Iqaluit’s branch of Habitat for Humanity. The organization will use the money to build a new home — the fifth such project done by Habitat for Humanity in Iqaluit. Read more later at nunatsiaqonline.ca. (PHOTO BY STEVE DUCHARME)
