Christopher Hayward of Cape Dorset, a first-year student at the Nunavut Sivuniksavut college program in Ottawa, views the headstones at Vimy Ridge, site of a fierce battle fought in 1917, considered the turning point in World War I. NS first-year students landed in Paris on April 28 to begin a 10-day trip that will also include visits to Bruges and Amsterdam and meetings with French politicians and European Union officials to educate them on issues of importance to Inuit, such as seal hunting, polar bears, climate change, and contaminants. At Vimy, the NS students spent the afternoon visiting the Vimy Ridge memorial, visited one of the Canadian cemeteries and walked through some of the trenches that had been preserved and restored.
