Photo: NTI releases the Perry River oral history

On Dec. 13 Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. president Cathy Towtongie released the Perry River Oral History Project on the NTI website. That project contains the oral history transcripts recorded from Perry River residents who relocated to Gjoa Haven in 1967. “It gives me great pleasure today to make this important material available to Inuit and all Canadians. The stories of the people who relocated from Perry River to Gjoa Haven are now very well documented, and the world can read about the hardships and the experiences they endured during their remarkable journey,” Towtongie said. The project contains stories from Lucy Nimiqtaqtuq, Sarah Ullikattaq, Peter Apiana, David and Alice Siksik, Don and Annie Magaknak. These members of the Perry River group, shown here, worked with writer David Pelly to document their experiences. The result, a 200-page document you can now read at http://www.tunngavik.com/current-initiatives/perry-river/. (PHOTO COURTESY OF NTI)
