Veteran midwife Akinisie Qumaluk, at right, is recognized for her decades of work as a midwife at the Inuulitsik health centre in Puvirnituq, where she has delivered 669 babies. Qumaluk was one of many healthcare workers honoured by the Nunavik Regional Board of Health and Social Services last week during the organization’s annual general meeting in Kuujjuaq. “We need to keep our unborn babies healthy, as they are our future leaders, our future mayors, our future doctors and our future nurses; please don’t consume alcohol and drugs during pregnancy,” Qumaluk said in a speech.
