Salluit elder and veteran broadcaster at the Taqramiut Nipingat Inc. radio network in Nunavik, Elashuk Pauyungie, 75, died Dec. 7. In September 2012, above, she spoke in Kuujjuaq to a group of teachers from Nunavik's Ungava Bay communities. Pauyungie told the teachers about life in the years before schools were established in the region, when “we were just Inuit, living our lives,” and Inuit kids learned by watching, not from school work. Back then, children learned everything they needed to succeed and thrive, such as building an igloo. “That’s how successful and stable we were,” she said. (FILE PHOTO)
