Photo: Nunavik singer/songwriter picks up Indigenous music award

Nunavik singer and songwriter Jaaji Okpik gets some love from his partner Chelsea June after receiving a 2015 Indigenous Music Award at a Sept. 11 gala in Winnipeg. Okpik, who grew up in Quaqtaq and made his home in Kuujjuaq for years, won Best Indigenous or Francophone CD for his self-produced album Nunaga, My home, My land, which features Inuktitut, English and French-language songs he recorded at home. “Not bad for a bedroom recording,” Okpik joked in his acceptance speech.
