Photo: Nunavut artist designs new 25 cent coin

The new coin, which is not yet in circulation, was designed to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Canadian Arctic Expedition, “as well as the cultures and traditions that continue to thrive in Canada’s northern regions,” a press release says. A total of 12.5 million “Life in the North” quarters will be produced along with 12.5 million quarters designed by artist Bonnie Ross depicting explorers preparing for their northern journey. “We are pleased that our new circulation coins help Canadians learn even more about the Arctic’s past and present, as well as its unique Aboriginal cultures,” said Ian Bennett, president and CEO of the Royal Canadian Mint.
