Photo: Nunavut commissioner offers Christmas goodies to Iqalungmiut

Nunavut’s Commissioner Edna Elias (right) poses with Meeka Kilabuk at the commissioner’s public Christmas reception at Iqaluit’s Anglican Parish Hall Dec. 10. Elias said about 50 people had come by to visit, enjoying plenty of hot beverages and food, including an enormous Christmas cake. Kilabuk recently ran unsuccessfully in the Qikiqtani Inuit Association’s presidential election, garnering plenty of media attention when one of her campaign signs was defaced on election day with misogynistic graffiti. That graffiti has attracted international media attention, she said, and is prompting the RCMP to consider laying hate crime charges. (PHOTO BY THOMAS ROHNER)
