The Nunavut Liberal association on July 27 named veteran politician Hunter Tootoo as their candidate for the federal election that’s expected this Oct. 19. This will be Tootoo’s second run at a seat in the House of Commons. In 1997, he ran for the New Democratic Party, finishing third, with 23.8 per cent of the vote, behind Okalik Eegeesiak of the Progressive Conservatives at 24.1 per cent and Nancy Karetak-Lindell of the Liberals, who won the seat that year with 45.9 per cent of the vote. Tootoo also held the Iqaluit Centre seat in the Nunavut legislature between 1999 and 2013, and served as speaker, education minister and minister responsible for the Nunavut Housing Corp.
