Premier Peter Taptuna, MLAs and a full gallery gave Amagoalik a standing ovation when Elias hung the Order of Nunavut medal around his neck. “I have received a number of awards recognizing the work that I have done with my political life,” Amagoalik said during his speech. “This award is the one I appreciate the most, because it comes from Nunavut.” Amagoalik began his political career in the 1970s and was intimately involved in the creation of Nunavut as a territory. Amagoalik, who lives in Iqaluit, recently resumed a long-standing column he used to write for Nunatsiaq News called “My Little Corner of Canada.” (PHOTO BY THOMAS ROHNER)
