Photo: Nunavut school puts garbage where it belongs

Christian Dufour, sociocultural coordinator with Trois-Soleils School in Iqaluit, at the rear, helped lead students on a campaign to clean up trash in the Iqaluit creek known as Kuugalaak on Oct. 2. Students and staff pulled several bags of refuse and trash as part of the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup, a national effort to keep shorelines free of litter. The project encourages students to take care of their community, learn about environmental concerns, and “live out Inuit Quajimajatuqangit (traditional values) that are at the heart of Nunavut education,” said François Ouellette, teacher-organizer of the French-language school’s yearly effort.
