Nunavut Sivuniksavut college in Ottawa said farewell to one of its founders April 15. Murray Angus, who helped start up NS in 1985, is retiring after teaching at the school for 25 years. What does he see when he looks back? “It looks phenomenal to have had the opportunity to be involved in this work,” Angus said April 21, calling NS students, “some of the brightest people you’d ever want to meet.” Angus, who has been teaching land claims and Inuit-government relations at NS, has been an instructor at the school for nearly its entire 31-year history, minus six years off in the 1990s. He says he still plans to teach a course each term otherwise he’d miss the students and his colleagues too much. He’s not sure what else he’ll do in retirement but he plans to embrace the transition, “from who I was to who I am becoming.” He said he is grateful to Inuit leaders who created Nunavut and the ones who have supported NS over the years. Angus was appointed to the Order of Canada in 2011. (PHOTO BY MELISSA IRWIN)
