Nunavut’s women’s hockey team for the 2014 Arctic Winter Games came together Nov. 11 at Iqaluit’s AWG arena after a busy weekend of tryouts. Coaches selected this group of 17 players from 32 of Nunavut’s best players, from all three regions of the territory. The girls, aged 14 to 18, returned to their home communities after playing their first game against a boys’ team from Iqaluit. “We really enjoyed that game,” said coach Steve Paterson, even though the girls were edged 6-5. “That was some really strong competition for us.” The Nunavut women will compete in Fairbanks, Alaska this March, when they will face teams from Alaska, the Northwest Territories, Yukon and Northern Alberta.
