Nunavut Liberal hopeful Hunter Tootoo picks up his federal nomination papers Aug. 18, his 52nd birthday, with his daughter Taya joining him for the photo op. All candidates who wish to run in the Oct. 19 federal election must file nomination papers by Mon., Sept. 28, 2015. In order to be eligible, you must be a Canadian citizen, at least 18 years old and you must file official nomination papers with the returning officer for the riding where you intend to run. Normally, a candidate must get 100 signatures from qualified electors but in remote districts like Nunavut, you need only 50. You must also submit a $1,000 deposit which is reimbursed if proper forms are filed after the election. Full details of how to run for federal officer can be found at the Elections Canada website at www.elections.ca.
