Tens of thousands of marchers walked from Central Park along a two-mile route through the west side of midtown Manhattan in advance of the one-day UN climate summit to be held Sept. 23 at the UN headquarters building. The UN secretary general, Ban Ki-Moon, called the meeting to build political support for a new international climate change treaty, although the summit falls outside the process established within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
