A rally echoes rally in Ottawa: Shouts of “Our food, our water!” and “We do not consent!” echoed across Iqaluit’s busiest intersection during lunch hour, Nov. 30. About 50 people chanted and held signs on the steps of Iqaluit’s Igluvut building, drawing cheers from onlookers and honks of solidarity from passing cars. The rally is taking place on the same day as a similar rally outside Canada’s Supreme Court in Ottawa. Representatives from the Hamlet of Clyde River and the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation are appealing against the National Energy Board’s decision permitting development on land and adjacent waters to the communities. The parties argue that they were not properly consulted poor the NEB rulings. “Its something that affects all Inuit, all of Baffin,” says Nunavut Sivuniksavut graduate, Marley Dunkers, who attended the Iqaluit rally. “I’ve been following it since we found out the NEB said they would go ahead with it, I totally stand with Clyde River.” (PHOTO BY STEVE DUCHARME)
