Photo: Parents meet with IDEA on French courses

A group of six kids look on as 20 discouraged parents vent their frustrations at the Iqaluit District Education Authority meeting Sept. 23 held at Nakasuk Elementary School. Parents are angry about Aqsarniit Middle School dropping its French course for Grade 7 students due to a lack of interest. But many parents challenged that point, saying that there are more than 10 students in that grade who are interested in taking French. “We have some questions that need to be answered, and nobody’s answering them for us,” said Glen Tucker of Iqaluit, whose daughter is in Grade 7 and wants to continue studying French.Tucker brought a list with more than 100 names attached to a petition asking for the school to reinstate the French course. “I’m even frustrated to the point now that I want to take someone and shake them — what’s going on?” IDEA board member Andrew Tagak said, “We will investigate.” Read more about the meeting later on Nunatsiaqonline.ca.
