Photo: Photo collection features 3,600 images

Former Nunavut resident Nick Newbery describes a collection of photos he recently put online in collaboration with the territory’s Department of Culture and Heritage.“I just took photographs because I wanted to record what I saw, plain and simple,” he told a small audience gathered at the department for the April 17 launch of the Nick Newbery Photo Collection website at nick.beta.katittut.ca.The online exhibit features some 3,600 images Newbery took largely during his three-decade career as a schoolteacher in the Arctic.“I want to leave those memories for other people to enjoy,” said Newbery, who left the territory in 2005. He now shares his northern expertise as co-ordinator of the Nunavut Teacher Practicum Program at Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. (PHOTO BY PETER VARGA)
