Photo: PM Harper visits Iqualuit?

For the second time since 2009, the Prime Minister’s office sent out a press release with the name of Nunavut’s capital spelled “Iqualuit.” The gaffe was quickly corrected on the Feb. 23 backgrounder, which detailed the government’s $27 million spending announcement for adult education across the North, announced Feb. 23 in Iqaluit. When the name of the capital city was misspelled in an August, 2009 news release, the Nunavut Languages Commissioner’s office explained that the word — when spelled with an extra “u” — suggests a derogatory reference to “people with unwiped bums.” “So hopefully our collective typos… will help better inform all of us to not make the same mistake twice,” said Dimitri Soudas, Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s press secretary at the time.
