Photo: Print exhibition opens in Winnipeg

This stonecut image of an owl produced in 1959 by Lukta Qiatsuk is among the works from Cape Dorset included in a Winnipeg Art Gallery exhibition, which opened May 12. Called “Inuit Prints: Japanese Inspiration,” the exhibition continues until Aug. 26. To learn more about printmaking himself, John Houston, who introduced printmaking to Cape Dorset more than 50 years ago, travelled to Japan in November 1958 to study woodcut printmaking for three months with one of the world’s leading masters Un’ichi Hiratsuka. “This exhibition tells the remarkable story of that cross-cultural artistic encounter and its extraordinary results,” says Darlene Wight, curator of Inuit art at the Winnipeg Art Gallery.
