The Mary River mine was a big topic for Inuit delegates on Oct. 8, the final day of the Qikiqtani Inuit Association’s annual general meeting in Iqaluit. QIA delegates talked about their Inuit impact and benefit agreement with Baffinland Iron Mines Corp., and a community engagement strategy for affected communities as the environmental review of Baffinland’s Phase 2 proposal for Mary River moves through the Nunavut Impact Review Board. They also talked about a wildlife compensation fund for hunters affected by the iron ore mine and a framework for setting a minimum Inuit employment level at Mary River. (PHOTO BY STEVE DUCHARME)
