Photo: Quebec’s health minister visits Nunavik

Quebec health minister Gaétan Barrette, left, shakes hands with veteran Nunavimmiut midwife Leah Tulugak-Qinuajuak Sept. 1 at the Inuulitsivik health centre in Puvirnituq. Barrette, Aboriginal affairs minister Geoffrey Kelley and Ungava MNA Jean Boucher toured health centres in both Kuujjuaq and Puvirnituq earlier this week. “The personnel are doing a great job,” Barrette said of Nunavik’s health care workers. “But the future has to be by training people locally. And I hope we’ll be able to implement decisions that will be able to help with that.” Tulugak-Qinuajuak is a good example; she’s been delivering babies along the Hudson coast since 1986.
