Canadian Rangers from the Nunavik communities of Kangiqsualujjuaq, Kuujjuaq, Tasiujaq and Aupaluk wait to leave Feb. 28 in Kuujjuaq on a 450-kilometre journey to Schefferville, where they will participate in winter exercises with members of the Canadian military. The two-day trip south can be dangerous, said Sgt. Guy Malenfant, one of three instructors accompanying the group travelling on 44 snowmobiles. That’s because of the heavy snow and occasional pockets of air which can form under the snow. The Rangers from the Second Canadian Ranger Patrol planned to travel all day, breaking for the night at 10:30 p.m. (PHOTO BY JANE GEORGE)
