Photo: Rare beluga surfaces in Cambridge Bay

A large white beluga surfaces Sept. 22 in the waters in front of the western Nunavut community of Cambridge Bay, where the beluga hunt continues Sept. 23. This is first beluga whale spotted in this western Nunavut community since the 1970s although beluga whales have visited Kugluktuk to the west. Some in Cambridge Bay suggest that the beluga, which may belong to a larger pod, followed the CCG icebreaker Sir Wilfrid Laurier, which is at anchor in the community. (PHOTO BY GORDON POULTNEY)
