Photo: Recognition for a special RCMP constable, Andrew Ooyoumut

Sally Webster, daughter of the late RCMP special constable Andrew Ooyoumut, lays a wreath at the Memorial Wall of the RCMP in Regina during a Sept. 11 ceremony which saw Ooyoumut’s added name to the RCMP Honour Roll, Memorial Wall and Cenotaph, which honour members who lost their lives while performing policing duties. Ooyoumut, who once walked through a blizzard to bring food to starving families, was in his late 30s when he drowned July 21, 1954, in the Kikatavyuk River near Baker Lake while helping to catch fish for RCMP sled dogs. Webster and her sisters, Lucy Evo and Janet Tagoona, and her daughter, Deborah Kigjugalik Webster, attended the Sept. 11 ceremony dressed in pukiliks made by Ooyoumut’s late wife.
