Photo: Remembering Annie

The late Annie Pootoogook’s brother, Pauloosie Joanasie, and her cousin Kilatja Simeonie, display a photo of the beloved artist with Simeonie Kunnuk (to their left) and Norman Igloopialik (to their right) at a noon hour vigil at Parliament Hill Oct. 4 that was held to demand justice for missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls. Organizers dedicated the event to Annie Pootoogook’s memory and Inuit in Ottawa flocked there for a big demonstration of solidarity. Sytukie Joamie of Iqaluit, now an Inuit knowledge keeper in Ottawa, said he respects police officers who dedicate their lives to public service but he denounced racist comments posted recently on the Ottawa Citizen’s website by an Ottawa Police Service sergeant.
