Photo: Science matters to Cambridge Bay students

Oliver Maksagak, five, and Avi Maksagak, 10, show off their posters after the March 12 “Lets Talk Science” fair at Kiilinik High School in Cambridge Bay. Their favourite experiment was the “animal in its habitat.”
For that one, students glued a piece of paper onto a straw then drew an animal on one side and its habitat on the other. When you spin the straw fast enough, an optical illusion makes the two images come together so that the animal appears to be placed in its habitat. “I loved that one,” said Avi Maksagak. “Let’s Talk Science” is an award-winning, national charitable organization focused on education and outreach to support youth development, their website says. They “create and deliver unique learning programs and services that engage children, youth and educators in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.” (PHOTO BY KELCEY WRIGHT) (PHOTO BY KELCEY WRIGHT)
