Photo: Sealing highlights shared maritime culture

This could easily be a scene in Nunavut, but the trees give it away. Sealskins dry in the sun at the home of hunter and carver Derrick Pottle in Rigolet, Nunatsiavut. Nunatsiavut hunters regularly harvest seals and dry the skins for personal use or sale. Through a program announced last year, the federal government is now offering money to provincial and territorial government bodies, and other agencies, to promote and market the Canadian Indigenous sealskin industry to countries in the European Union.
