Students from the Nunavut Sivuniksavut program in Ottawa take a stand in favour of life at a celebration of life event held Sept. 10 at Parliament Hill to promote suicide prevention. “We have always had a great strength to survive,” Terry Audla, president of Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, said in a speech. “It starts with equality. We need to close the gaps in early childhood education, culture and language, income distribution, housing, personal safety and security, education, food security, health services, mental wellness.” Nearly 100 people, many of them Inuit from Ottawa and their friends, attended the noon-hour gathering.
