Photo: Snow geese on the move

By SPECIAL TO NUNATSIAQ NEWS

About 25 million snow geese are on their way north, passing through southern Quebec, Ontario and Manitoba. With their population numbers up 300 per cent from 30 years ago, they're eating their way up to the Arctic where they're putting a stress on the environment. More fertilizer use in southern wintering grounds, along with more wildlife refuges are contributing to the population explosion because more geese arrive in better shape to the Arctic where they breed and nest, Frank Baldwin, game bird manager for Manitoba Conservation and Water Stewardship, said in the Winnipeg Free Press.
