Photo: Snowy owls return to Sanikiluaq to nest

Who-who’s looking at you? A snowy owl perches on the tundra near Sanikiluaq Aug. 12. These majestic but fearsome predators breed on the Arctic tundra every year where females lay three to 11 eggs during the summer months, according to nationalgeographic.com. Their preferred meal is lemmings — as many as they can find — says the website. “An adult may eat more than 1,600 lemmings a year, or three to five every day. The birds supplement their diet with rabbits, rodents, birds and fish.” Photographer Sarah Meeko said she saw four other owls that day in the area and she thought they were probably nesting nearby.
